Facelift Surgery

As people age, the effects of gravity, exposure to the sun, and the stresses of daily life can be seen in their faces. Deep creases form between the nose and mouth; the jaw line grows slack and jowly; folds and fat deposits appear around the neck.

Introduction to Facelift Surgery

If you feel you are in need of facial rejuvenation to restore youth to your appearance, a facelift procedure is a very viable option available to you. This procedure specifically tightens skin around the face and neck to combat wrinkles and sagging skin that are the result of ageing and weight loss. Facelift surgery provides far more outstanding results than simply having wrinkle relaxing injections, for example.

A facelift (technically known as ‘rhytidectomy’), is unable to stop this ageing process, but what it can do is “set back the clock”. A facelift will improve the most visible signs of ageing by removing excess fat, tightening under-lying muscles, and re-draping the skin of your face and neck. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping.

Mr Andrea Marando is highly experienced in performing facelift procedures, and consults mainly from The Star Clinic in Manchester or in Harley Street, London.

REALSELF reviews amended

Cosmetic surgery is a huge decision to make and one that isn’t easy. Therefore, if you are considering a treatment of this kind, you should consult with a reputable surgeon, such as Mr Andrea Marando, beforehand to assess your suitability. Your surgeon is there to help and advise you and so if you have any questions, be sure to ask.

The first consultation with Mr Marando will usually be in Manchester or London and is expected to last for about one hour. During your initial consultation, you will be given a full examination to determine whether a facelift is the right procedure for your individual needs.

There are many types of facelift that focus on specific areas, such as the forehead or the cheeks. There is also the option to have a ‘Mini Facelift’ as well as the popular full facelift procedures on offer. These are sometimes otherwise known as ‘Lifestyle Lifts’ or ‘Quick Lifts’ and differ from the full procedures in aspects such as cost, time consumption, and the results following a simpler surgery. Mr Marando will explain the procedure options in detail, and advise you and guide you in order to make the perfect choice. Aspects such as your lifestyle and health can affect suitability and so it is always important to be open and honest during the consultation process. The best suited procedure for you will usually be decided at your initial consultation.

If you decide to go ahead and proceed with the procedure, you will always be invited to come back for a second consultation with Mr Marando, closer to the date of surgery.

Who is the best candidate for a Facelift procedure?

An ideal candidate for a facelift is a man or woman whose face and neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity and whose bone structure is strong and well defined. Most patients are in their forties to sixties, but facelifts can be done successfully on people in their seventies or eighties as well.

A facelift can make you look younger and fresher, and it may enhance your self-confidence in the process. But it is important to remember that it can’t give you a totally different look, nor can it restore the health and vitality of your youth. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Mr Marando during your consultation.

The Procedure

Different procedures fall under facial rejuvenation, such as the ‘MACS lift’, ‘Mini Facelift’, ‘Quick Lift’or ‘Full Facelift’. The aim is to tailor the operation on the specific case. The incisions are hidden in the natural creases around the ears; muscle are tightened, skin excess trimmed away and if appropriate fat excess is aspirated, or when necessary repositioned. Incisions are far smaller when undergoing a ‘Quick Lift’ or ‘Lifestyle Lift’ procedure; this therefore will create a more subtle effect upon the patient’s appearance, although still achieving similar outcomes to the ‘Full Facelift’ in that it will tighten your skin to achieve a more youthful appearance.

Length of the Operation – 1.5 to 4 hours.

Anaesthesia – Facelift surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic, however some limited procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation.

Hospital stay – For limited procedures the operation is performed as a ‘day case’, but mostly patients can expect an overnight stay.

Possible side effects – Some patients will experience temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness of skin; some patients report a tight feeling and dry skin. For men, you may occasionally need to shave behind the ears, (where beard-growing skin is repositioned).

Risks – As with every cosmetic surgery procedure, Facelift surgery carries some uncertainty and risks. Very occasionally the following may occur: injury to the nerves that control facial muscles or feeling (usually temporary, very rarely permanent); in some cases infection and bleeding; poor healing (mainly in heavy smokers); excessive scarring; asymmetry or change in hairline.

In the hands of a competent and experienced surgeon such as Mr Andrea Marando, the risks can be greatly minimised.

Depending on what kind of facelift procedure you choose, your recovery time may vary.

Typically, when undergoing a ‘Full Facelift’, we would expect the recovery process to be as follows:

Initial recovery – Patients can expect to be back to work within 7 to 14 days.

Physical exercise – Patients can part-take in physical exercise of the lower-body within 2 to 3 weeks; you should wait 3 to 4 weeks before exercising your upper-body

Bruising – Bruising will fade within 1 to 2 weeks.

Fading of scars – Patients can be expect this to be anywhere from weeks to months.

If you, like many of our clients, want to achieve a youthful look without going down the route of traditional surgery then the scarless, also known as the endoscopic, facelift can be a great option for both men and women. The scarless facelift will give you a more fresh look to help you feel confident about your skin and can help to improve your self assurance and performance at work, in relationships and in your life in general.

The scarless facelift uses fine stitches under the skin to lift the area being treated, leaving you with a natural appearance, as the procedure requires three to five cuts, less than an inch long, this procedure will leave you with virtually no scarring. The scarless facelift is a great option to avoid unwanted scars and is a less invasive procedure than a traditional facelift. Because the facelift is performed using minimal incisions in the skin, there is no scarring as from a traditional facelift and also because of this the recovery period is usually a lot shorter.

Another perk of this non-invasive treatment is that it can usually be performed under local anaesthetic, again decreasing recovery time, and risks related to invasive surgery and general anaesthetic. This treatment is best suited to patients in their 30s, 40s or 50s who still have a certain amount of elasticity in the skin.

It is very important that when considering having any kind of surgery that you consult an experienced surgeon. Mr Marando is an experienced plastic who operates from the Star Clinic Manchester. Mr Marando will guide you through the process and help you to achieve the results that you want. There are several different ways that the scarless facelift can be performed, and Mr Marando will tailor your operation to what you want to achieve from the procedure. At the Star Clinic Mr Marando can perform brow lifts, lower face lifts, and mid face lifts using the scarless facelift technique.

Brow lifts can help combat crow’s eyes that make your face look tired and aged, mid face lifts can help to reduce jowls round the chin area, and lower face lifts can significantly improve the jawline and the jowls, giving you back the youthful, confident jawline of your youth. Mr Marando will help you decide which type of facelift is right for you and also whether the procedure could be done injunction with any other procedures to help achieve a youthful look, for instance scarless face lifts are particularly effective when performed in conjunction with eyelid and bag correction surgery.

The Procedure

The scarless facelift is a highly innovative procedure which uses special stitches which are elastic and absorbable. There are only three to five short incisions in the skin, which can easily be hidden in the hairline. After these short incisions are made, the stitches are hooked to specific points under the skin and attached to stable tissue, a camera is used to pinpoint the correct areas and remove any fatty tissue to help reshape the face. This allows the area to be lifted, this part of the process is tailored for your specific needs by Mr Marando, to make sure that the results achieved from the process is exactly what you want.
Due to the non-invasive nature of the scarless facelift the operation can be done under local anaesthetic which rules out any risks associated with general anesthetic. The procedure usually takes 45-75 minutes and in most cases does not require an overnight stay in hospital. If your facelift is being performed in junction with another procedure then this may increase the length of the procedure.

Because of the non invasive nature of this treatment the recovery process is relatively easy. Although recovery changes from person to person the recovery time tends to be around a week and you will have at least on follow up appointment with Mr Marando’s team to check you are happy with the work and that you are healing well, as well as receiving an aftercare plan. After surgery you will feel a small amount of discomfort but this can be remedied with paracetamol and ibuprofen. You may notice a slight puckering of the skin, especially if you have had a lower face lift, but this should totally disperse within 3-4 weeks, along with any post operative swelling which is, unfortunately, unavoidable.

The scarless facelift option limits the risks of complications that go along with a traditional facelift, this means that recovery is more likely to go smoothly, and for you to achieve the results that you desire. The scarless facelift procedure is a great options for people who want a non-invasive treatment that can also target traditionally hard to reach areas, as well as having a quick and hassle free recovery period.

Do you want to look younger and wrinkle free without people knowing how you achieve your youthful look? If this is the case, then the short scar facelift is the best solution for men and women alike. Compared to traditional facelift results the short scar surgery is a much more effective treatment. Surgical facial rejuvenation has become an art, with surgeons trying to disguise their work as much as possible, to give a flattering, youthful look. With minimal scaring, and the scars that are visible being disguised behind your ear and hairline, the short scar facelift will leave you with a youthful look without the knowing glances that have previously plagued those who have opted for face lifts. The philosophy behind developing the short scar facelift is to tailor the procedure to each individual, using your natural bone structure to re-drape your skin in a flattering and natural fashion, making sure that the skin is not pulled unnaturally tight.

A short scar facelift will boost self-confidence and body image, giving you a more youthful image in an increasingly modern world.

Mr Marando is a highly experienced cosmetic surgeon based in Manchester. Before your procedure Mr Marando will discuss with you what you would like to achieve from this operation, and the best options to achieve your desired facelift results. By gently lifting the skin Mr Marando can show you what to expect post operatively, so you know if this is the right option for you. There are various things to consider both which in consultation with Mr Marando and before you book your consultation.

The short scar facelift is particularly good when the patient wishes to decrease the ‘jowly’ look around the chin that is common with people over 40. Short Scar Surgery presents a practical option for a more youthful appearance, defining the jawline, lifting the midface and defining the upper neck. It is important to remember that a short scar facelift does not turn back time and cannot completely restructure your whole face. If there are other features of your face that you want to rejuvenate then Mr Marando will discuss procedures that can take place at the same time as the short scar facelift, such as the correction of eye bags and chemical peels for lines around the mouth, both of which can be performed in conjunction with a facelift.

The Procedure

The Short Scar facelift is carried out under general anaesthetic and usually involves an overnight stay in hospital. During the procedure, Mr Marando will make sure you get the required results of your youthful look. The procedure will start at the top of the ear, which is a point that will be hidden by hair after the operation is done, and the incision will follow the curves in front of the ear, round the earlobe and up behind the ear for 1cm. The incision is mirrored on the other side of the face. Next the skin and deep tissues are re-modelled and re-draped, following and complimenting your natural bone structure. The incisions are closed with stitches in front of the ear.

Small drainage tubes will be inserted underneath the skin during the operation and will be removed the day following your surgery. You will also have a head bandage to gently pressurise the incisions during the night following the surgery.

Mr Marando will provide you with a post-operative care plan and mild painkillers such as paracetamol will be adequate to manage any discomfort. You will be advised to wash your hair very gently after the surgery and avoid stooping or carrying out vigorous activities within the first five days of your operation. Sutures are removed seven days post operatively and here the healing process really begins. Scars are usually very faint after a facelift, and your scars from a short scar facelift will be hidden within your hairline. Bruising and swelling can follow a facelift, but should completely disappear in two weeks.

Complications after a facelift a very rare, swelling and bruising may be prolonged if the patient has diabetes or smokes. Nerve damage is extremely rare, and most patients make a full recovery.

The MACSLIFT, or ‘Minimal Access Cranial Suspension Lift’, is a surgical procedure that has gained popularity in the past few years amongst both plastic surgeons and patients. The MACS Facelift is a procedure evolved from the ‘S lift’, which combines a limited dissection with suture suspensions.

Are you a suitable candidate for the MACSLIFT?

Are you seeking facial rejuvenation but don’t want a full facelift? Are you waiting to get older before you invest heavily in that ‘younger-looking’ face? If the answer to these two questions is ‘yes’, then you could be appropriate for the MACSLIFT. The MACSLIFT is a really effective procedure, with results that can last up to 12 years.

The most common age in patients that choose the MACSLIFT is between early thirties and late fifties. The MACSLIFT is a popular choice in both men and women.

When you are researching a procedure such as MACSLIFT, it is important that you choose your cosmetic surgeon very carefully. Mr Andrea Marando is highly experienced in performing the MACSLIFT operation.

The first consultation with Mr Marando usually takes about one hour and will be at The Star Clinic in Manchester. During the initial consultation process, Mr Marando will ask you about your desires and expectations from the procedure – it is really important that you are open and honest in answering any questions that Mr Marando may have as this will determine if the MACSLIFT is right for you.

You will be assessed; photos will be taken, analysed and discussed; your expectations will be evaluated, and the benefits and risks of the MACSLIFT will be explained in full detail.

If you decide to go ahead with the procedure at The Star Clinic, Mr Marando will invite you to come back for a second consultation closer to the date of surgery.

The Procedure

During a MACSLIFT procedure, Mr Marando will make some incisions that are hidden in the natural crease found at the front of the ears. There will also be a zig-zag incision that is positioned just a few millimetres inside the sideburns.

Limited dissection will be performed by Mr Marando using two to three sutures in the shape of a loop. Muscles are tightened and the neck is lifted, before excess skin is trimmed away. If it is appropriate, any fat excess may be aspirated or repositioned where necessary.

Length of operation – The length of a MACSLIFT op is usually between 1.5 and 2 hours.

Anaesthesia – Mr Marando usually performs MACSLIFT under local anaesthetic with sedation (twilight sedation).

Hospital stay – In most cases, the MACSLIFT will be performed as day-surgery and won’t require a hospital stay.

Possible side effects – The possible side effects from a MACSLIFT procedure are: temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness of skin, tight-feeling skin, dry-skin. For men, sometimes shaving behind ears is required where the ‘beard-growing’ is repositioned.

Risks – As with all cosmetic surgery procedures, there are some possible risks associated, however, in the hands of a capable and experienced surgeon such as Mr Marando, the risks are minimised. The risks could include:

Injury to the nerves that control facial muscles (very rarely permanent and usually just temporary if at all)
Poor healing (heavy smoking can cause this)
Excessive scarring
Asymmetry or change in hairline

Recovery timescale for the MACSLIFT:

Back to work – After the MACSLIFT, you should expect to return to work within 7 to 14 days.

Physical exercise – You can exercise your lower body in 2 to 3 weeks, and the upper body within 3 to 4 weeks.

Bruising – Any bruising should fade within 1 to 2 weeks.

Fading of scars – Post MACSLIFT, the fading of your scars can be the longest part of the healing process and can take anything from weeks to months.
