Nipple Reduction Surgery

The areola itself is the dark, pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. Women seek areola reduction surgery for a number of reasons. Areola reduction can positively affect a woman’s self-image and often acts to help improve not just appearance, but also their self-esteem.

Introduction to Nipple Reduction Surgery

Areolas, just like breasts, come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and although there is no right or wrong size for the areola to be, many women feel that asmaller areola would complement their breasts better. A smaller areola often creates a more proportionate look to the breast increasing confidence and body image. It may be that time has taken its toll on your breasts through pregnancy, weight gain or just ageing an areola reduction will be able to give your breasts, and your confidence, a “facelift”.

As the name suggests, areola reduction surgery canpermanently reduce the size of the area of dark pigmented skin around the nipple and can also reduce any puffiness of the areola. Mr Andrea Marando is a highly experienced plastic surgeon, mainly consulting from The Star Clinic, Manchester.

Consultation

Your initial consultation will most likely take place at The Star Clinic, Manchester. The purpose of this consultation is for Mr Marando to determine your suitability for surgery and provide you with the best possible treatment advice based on your desires and needs. Mr Marando will discuss with you in an initial consultation the best options for your particular circumstances and will examine your areolas to give you the best advice. Mr Marando will outline in detail what to expect during and after the procedure and answer all your questions.

If you decide to go ahead and proceed with the procedure, you will always be invited to come back for a second consultation with Mr Marando, closer to the date of surgery.

Who is the best candidate for a Nipple Reduction procedure?

Once you decide to consider surgery, Mr Marando and his experienced team will guide you through the process and help you decide exactly what is right for you. Mr Marando, with his extensive knowledge and experience and dedicated Manchester based team, will guide and advise you through your decision of whether surgery will be the best option for you. Sometimes an areola reduction goes along with a breast lift or reduction and the procedures can be done at the same time.

The Procedure

Areola reduction with Mr Marando is a relatively short procedure, with the patient being under local anaesthetic, which means your recovery time will be not as long as a more invasive procedure and takes between 1 and 2 hours. Patients can usually go straight home when the anaesthetic wears off.

Areola reduction is performed removing a section of the outer dark pigmented area of the areola. The removal of this excess skin reduces the size of the areola itself and the remaining, smaller, areola remains. The skin surrounding this area is brought together with absorbable stitches to surround your new, more proportionate areola. Absorbent stitches will break down within one or two weeks as the area heals, meaning that care for the area will be easier and more convenient for you, making your recovery as easy and pleasant as possible.

Scars from this procedure are usually minimal and fade with time, so will not compromise the increased attractiveness of your breasts. A permanent stitch is placed deeply in the tissues to create widening of the areola. This means that you would be very unlikely to experience further widening of the areola, making this procedure lasting, making sure your self-esteem stays at an all-time high.

Recovery

Initial After-Care: Although you can go home immediately after the surgery, it is still advised to take it easy after the procedure, for at least a week.

To aid healing you can do a number of things;

  • Ice the area to reduce swelling
  • Avoid lifting anything moderately heavy in the first few days
  • Avoid reaching over your head in the first few days
  • Wear a supportive bra for 2-3 weeks after surgery

Back to work: As a relatively non-invasive treatment, recovery time for this procedure is quite short. Mr Marando will check the healing process after procedure with a follow up appointment 1-2 weeks after your surgery, and can help tailor your exercise and work regime to suit you. Depending on what work you do, you should be able to return to work quickly after the procedure, most patients going back after a few days to a week.

Physical exercise: Although it is important to keep the blood flowing, exercise should be kept low key with a lower heart rate for the first couple of weeks to aid healing and to reduce any further bruising.

Fading of scars: Dis-solvable stitches mean there is no removing of stitches and scars fade relatively quickly.
