Necklift Surgery

The neck is a tremendously important area and one of the parts of the body that shows more obvious signs of ageing. Similarly to the ‘dorsum of the hands’, the neck is an area that deserves aesthetic attention and plays a major role in our appearance.

Introduction to Necklift Surgery

A Neck Lift, technically recognised as a ‘Platysmaplasty’ is the plastic surgery procedure used to reshape and tighten the skin around the neck and jaw.

Through tightening and reshaping the skin around the neck and jaw, this helps to eliminate signs of ageing and create a tighter, smoother and more youthful look. The vast majority of patients that undergo a Neck Lift procedure are 40 years and over.

Who is the best candidate for a Necklift procedure?

Do you feel that you want to look younger, but don’t want a full facelift? Is your upper face still aesthetically pleasing to you? If this is the case, but you still want to fix any excess, wrinkling neck skin, then a Neck Lift could be the right procedure for you.

A good candidate for a Neck Lift will be:

  • A healthy individual who doesn’t have any medical conditions that may impair the healing process
  • A non-smoker
  • An individual with a positive outlook and realistic expectations from surgery

The Procedure

Mr Marando’s aim, at The Star Clinic, is to tailor the operation to the specific, individual case. A typical Neck Lift procedure is usually a set of techniques such as:

– Removal of excess skin

– Liposuction to remove excess fat

– Removal or alteration of neck muscles

– Botox injections

The incisions are hidden in the crease under the chin (around 3 cm, although this incision is necessary only in specific and selected cases), and in the natural creases behind the ears and in the hairline. Through these incisions, the muscles are tightened (platysmaplasty) and skin excess is trimmed away. When appropriate, fat excess is aspirated.

Length of the Operation – The typical length of a Neck Lift procedure is 1.5 to 2 hours.

Anaesthesia – Limited Neck Lift procedures can be performed as Twilight surgery (local anaesthetic with sedation), but general anaesthetic is most commonly used.

Hospital stay – For limited procedures a Neck Lift can be a day case, but most patients can expect an overnight hospital stay.

Possible side effects – The most common possible side effects after undergoing a Neck Lift procedure are temporary bruising, swelling, numbness and tenderness of skin, experiencing tight feeling and dry skin in the affected area.

Risks – Every cosmetic surgery procedure carries some uncertainty and risks. Occasionally the following may occur after undergoing a Neck Lift procedure:

  • Injury to the nerves that control facial muscles or feeling (usually temporary, very rarely permanent)
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Poor healing (mainly in heavy smokers)
  • Excessive scarring
  • Asymmetry or change in hairline

In the hands of a competent and experienced surgeon, such as Mr Andrea Marando, the risks are greatly minimised.

Recovery

When performing a Neck Lift procedure, Mr Marando aims to achieve a more youthful appearance to the neck area, and as long as you care for the wound as you recover and continue to live a healthy lifestyle, then this should easily be achieved.

Recovery from all cosmetic procedures will take some time, but Mr Marando will be on-hand for any advice you might need and will always provide follow-up consultations to ensure that the recovery process is happening within the expected timescales.

What is the recovery timescale after Neck Lift surgery?

Back to work – Patients should expect to be back to work within one to two weeks post Neck Lift surgery.

Physical exercise – After a Neck Lift procedure, patients can exercise their lower bodies within two to three weeks, but should wait three to four weeks before exercising the upper-body.

Bruising – Bruising should clear up about one to two weeks post Neck Lift surgery.

Fading of scars – Fading of scars post Neck Lift surgery is the longest part of the recovery process and can take anything from weeks to months.
