Abdominoplasty, known more commonly as a "tummy tuck," is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.

The surgical procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. But bear in mind, it does produce a permanent scar which, depending on the extent of the original problem and the surgery required to correct it, can extend from hip to hip.

THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR ABDOMINOPLASTY

Are men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal.

Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with slight obesity, can also be improved. Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight should postpone the surgery. Also, women who plan future pregnancies should wait, as vertical muscles in the abdomen that are tightened during surgery can separate again during pregnancy.

FACTS

Reasons for considering surgery are prominent and excess of abdominal fat and skin that do not respond to exercise, laxity due to pregnancies, stretch marks, weight loss and ageing.

The Procedure: Different procedures fall under this category  (mini / modified / full). The aim is to flatten the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles of abdominal wall. The incisions are hidden in the bikini line, abdominal muscles are tightened, skin excess trimmed away and if appropriate fat excess aspirated.

Length of the Operation: 1.5 to 3 hours.

Anesthesia: Usually general anaesthetic. However some limited procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation.

Hospital stay: For very limited procedures days case; mostly 1to 2 overnight stay.

Possible Side Effects: Temporary pain. Swelling, soreness, numbness of abdominal skin, bruising, tiredness for several weeks.

Risks: Every procedure carries some uncertainty and risks. Blood clots. Infection. Bleeding under the skin flap. Poor healing resulting in conspicuous scarring or skin loss (mainly in heavy smokers); excessive scarring. In the hands of a competent and experienced surgeon, the risks can be minimized.

Recovery: Back to work - 2 to 4 weeks. More strenuous activity - 4 to 8 weeks or more. Fading and flattening of scars - 3 months to 2 years.
