BREAST REDUCTION
We make every effort to ensure that the information contained on this site is accurate however, all information is subject to alteration from time to time. Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight, from back and neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Bra straps may leave indentations in their shoulders. And unusually large breasts can make a woman breast-feeding feel extremely self-conscious.
Breast Reduction, technically known as reduction mammaplasty, is designed for such women.
The surgical procedure removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal is to give the woman smaller, better shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body.
THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR BREAST REDUCTION
Breast Reduction is usually performed for physical relief rather than simply cosmetic improvement. Most women who have the surgery are troubled by very large, sagging breasts that restrict their activities and cause them physical discomfort. In most cases, breast reduction isn't performed until a woman's breasts are fully developed; however, it can be done earlier if large breasts are causing serious physical discomfort.
The best candidates are those who are mature enough to fully understand the surgical procedure and have realistic expectations about the results. Breast reduction is not recommended for women who intend to breast-feed.
Mr. Marando will explain you the procedure in details, advise you and guide you in order to make the right choice.
FACTS ON BREAST REDUCTION
Why: Breast Reduction is an excellent procedure to reduce the size and improve the shape of the breast, giving a more youthful appearance.
Reasons for considering surgery are: Excessive size and heaviness of the breasts limiting normal activities, sport, indentations on shoulders due to the bra, disproportion breast/shoulders/hips, discomfort.
The Procedure: To improve the shape of the breast, the nipple is lifted and the breast tissue repositioned in a more favourable position; at the same time the volume is reduced.
Length of the Operation: 2 to 3 hours.
Anesthesia: Usually general anaesthetic.
Hospital stay: 1 overnight stay in most cases.
Possible Side Effects: Temporary soreness and swelling. Change in nipple sensation, Nipple and fat necrosis (extremely rare). Breast sensitive to stimulation for a few weeks, scars.
Risks: Every procedure carries some uncertainty and risks. Most common problems are bleeding or infection, increase or decrease/loss in sensitivity of nipples or breast skin, occasionally permanent. Scars can sometimes be prominent or excessive.
In the hands of a competent and experienced surgeon, the risks can be minimized.
Recovery: Back to work: 1 to 2 weeks. Physical Exercise: Lower body 2 weeks, upper body 4 to 8 weeks. Contact with breasts: 3 to 4 weeks. Fading of scars: several months to a year, occasionally more.
