OTOPLASTY
Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.
For the most part, the operation is done on children between the ages of four and 14. Ears are almost fully grown by age four, and the earlier the surgery, the less teasing and ridicule the child will have to endure.
Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient.
If you're considering ear surgery for yourself or your child, this information will give you a basic understanding of the procedure-when it can help, how it's performed, and what results you can expect. It can't answer all of your questions, since a lot depends on your individual circumstances. Please be sure to ask Mr. Marando if there is anything you don't understand about the procedure.
FACTS ON OTOPLASTY
Reasons for considering surgery are: prominent ears, lack of natural folding.
The Procedure: Otoplasty is a procedure to correct excessive prominence of the ears and to recreate the natural folds. The incisions are hidden on the back of the ears; therefore is no visible scarring.
Length of the Operation: 1 to 2 hours.
Anesthesia: Usually general anesthetic in children and local anesthetic with or without sedation in adults.
Hospital stay: Day case or overnight stay.
Possible Side Effects: Temporary discomfort, tightness of ears, swelling, bruising.
Risks: Every procedure carries some uncertainty and risks. Occasionally the following may occur: infection, bleeding, slight asymmetry in healing or scarring.
In the hands of a competent surgeon the risks can be minimized.
Recovery: Back to work: 7 to 10 days. Physical Exercise: Lower body 2 weeks, upper body 4 weeks. Fading of scars: Weeks to months.
