Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman's breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. Breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts--at least, for a time. (No surgery can permanently delay the effects of gravity.)
Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume--for example, after pregnancy--breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both their firmness and their size.
The best candidates for mastopexy are healthy, emotionally-stable women who are realistic about what the surgery can accomplish. The best results are usually achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts.
FACTS ON MASTOPEXY / UPLIFT
Breast uplift is an excellent procedure to reshape the breast, retighten the tissue and giving a more youthful appearance. When combined with an augmentation with an appropriate breast implant, the patient will also achieve an increase of fullness.
Reasons for considering surgery are: loss of elasticity, firmness and volume of breast due to pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight loss, ageing.
The Procedure: To improve the shape of the breast, the nipple is lifted and the breast tissue repositioned in a more favorable position; when an increase of volume is also desired, breast implants can be simultaneously inserted.
Length of the Operation: 1 to 3 hours.
Anesthesia: Usually general anaesthetic.
Hospital stay: 1 overnight stay in most cases.
Possible Side Effects: Temporary soreness and swelling. Change in nipple sensation, Breast sensitive to stimulation for a few weeks, scars.
Risks: Every procedure carries some uncertainty and risks. Most common problems are bleeding or infection, increase or decrease/loss in sensitivity of nipples or breast skin, occasionally permanent; capsular contracture (hardening of the breast due to the formation of scar tissue around the implant). Scars can sometimes be prominent or excessive.
In the hands of a competent and experienced surgeon, the risks can be minimized.
Recovery: Back to work: 10/12 days to 2 weeks. Physical Exercise: Lower body 2 weeks, upper body 4 to 8 weeks. Contact with breasts: 3 to 4 weeks. Fading of scars: Several months to a year, occasionally more.
